How can a photon take multiple paths? It does so by not
existing in the first place. In physics this is called superposition. The more
one knows about its exact location the less one can know about its speed and
heading.

 The Double Split Experiment

If a photon has the opportunity to take one of two paths,

how does it decide which to take?

The answer of quantum mechanics:

If you leave it alone it will go down both paths as waves.

If you question it, the photon will give you the single path of a ballistic particle.
